Over the past number of weeks second year students have been involved in poetry workshops with poet Stephen James Smith. These workshops were part of the JCSP initiative called WRaPParound. WRaPParound is a spoken-word poetry initiative focusing on writing, reading and reciting poetry and rap.
Working with Stephen James Smith, the students learned about the craft of poetry, wrote their own poems and created a group poem titled 'Everyone Knows Everyone'. They developed their writing, oral language and listening skills, and gained confidence in their own abilities.
On Friday 26th April, 10 students travelled to UCC in Cork to perform their poems at a WRaPParound Showcase event, organised by the Junior Certificate School Programme Library Project. They joined students from schools in counties Wexford, Waterford, Cork and Limerick.
The 10 ECC students who attended were James Conboy O’Neill, Marharyta Dobel, Faith Doyle Murphy, Catherine Jobi, Keshon Kelly, Roman Lomaka, Nadia Nagy Gyorgy, Shane O’Toole, Amy Whelan and Milo Williams. They were accompanied by English teacher Mr. Rory Cunnea and School Librarian Ms. Mary Flynn. Well done to all who participated in this initiative.
