Awards Day

Last Thursday saw Enniscorthy Community College host its first in person Awards Day ceremony in over two years. The event saw the school pay tribute to over 80 students for their achievements across the realms of Sport, the Arts, Culture and Academia.

Chair of the Board of the newly constituted Southeast Technological University, former Provost and President of Trinity College Dublin, Dr. Patrick Prendergast was the special guest at the event. In his address Dr. Prendergast emphasised the importance of education in a modern society and how everybody’s relationship with education is different and that resilience, determination and commitment are the key factors to achieving one’s goals and career aspirations. Speaking to a large gathering of parents, students and staff, the former Provost paid particular tribute to the Leaving Certificate students hoping many would consider the Southeast Technological University as their choice for further education. Completing the top table was Director of Schools for Waterford and Wexford Education and Training Board (WWETB) Eimear Ryan, James Browne Minister of State for the Department of Justice and Equality, Paul Kehoe TD and Councillor Barbara Ann Murphy who is the current Chairperson on the WWETB Board.

In his address Dr. Iain Wickham spoke about the core values that are very much to the fore in the school, they include: excellence in education, respect, equality, care and community. All members of the school community were thanked for their ongoing efforts and support particularly during the last two years which were extremely challenging and a special mention was given to Conor Dempsey for his meticulous planning of the event and to Liam Sharkey who was MC. Commenting on student of the year Dr. Wickham said that “Breanna Sludds Keane has a tremendous work ethic and a steely determination to work to the best of her ability, was very active in school life and highly thought of by staff and students”.

The schedule for Gradam 2022 in the school was varied which reflects the varied character of school life across the different realms. A very important aspect of the ceremony was the Excellence in Class Awards, where the Teachers of a Class vote for a student who excels across the academic, cultural and sporting life of the school, twenty such students were honoured with this award.

The eclectic character of sporting provision at ECC was recognised by Award for sporting prowess in Gaelic games, Badminton, Basketball and Soccer. The pastoral care of the student is at the heart of school life at ECC and during the Awards ten young school leaders and mentors were honoured for their services in the Meitheal mentoring system. The Student Council was also recognised on the day for their excellent efforts throughout the year.

The core ethos of the WWETB around five principles including excellence in education, care, respect, community and equality were celebrated with five new awards celebrating the efforts of students in these areas of pastoral care and provision.

The traditional type of Award celebrating Academic achievement was the centre piece of the Awards ceremony with student receiving commemorative plaques and certificates in all subjects at Junior and Senior Cycle.
