On Thursday 13th March, 12 students travelled to the WWETB Chess Tournament in the Brandon House Hotel, New Ross. They were accompanied by Mr. Byrne and Ms. Flynn. In its second year, this tournament is organised jointly by the WWETB and JSCP Librarians from Enniscorthy Community College and Selskar College. This year 10 schools from across Wexford and Waterford participated, with a total of 124 students in 31 teams. Students competed in teams of four, in beginner or intermediate categories.
Representing ECC were Aarmin Joby (2 Ash), Sedrik Kazenas (2 Ash), Dmytro Khorolskyi (2 Ash), Seán Quigley (2 Ash), Danylo Sevostianov (2 Ash), Nikolas Gablas (2 Hazel), Dominykas Jakstys (2 Hazel), Adam O’Connor (2 Hazel), James Conboy O’Neill (3 Birch), Blazej Sowinski (3 Rowan), Ciaran Treacy (3 Rowan), and Bartek Jurkiewicz (6C). Everyone played exceptionally well and ECC were lucky to have two teams get to semifinal stages, one beginner and one intermediate. Both semifinals ended in tie-breaks, meaning an extra play-off round was needed. Unfortunately, ECC lost out narrowly in both. Congratulations to Kennedy College, winners in the beginner category and Selskar College, winners in the intermediate category.
Ms. Flynn was MC for the event, with Mr. Byrne looking after the rules of play. Both staff also had the important job of keeping scores.
