Beat 102-103 Junior Cycle Digital Media Literacy Roadshow visited Enniscorthy Community College today. The interactive session given to First Year students followed four main strands: (1) My Digital World (2) Following my interests online (3) Checking the facts and (4) Publishing myself.
Beats digital native presenters and content creators used concrete examples from Beat's website and social media channels to demonstrate the theory and included:
- Showcasing the difference between "publisher" and "platform" eg Beat is a "publisher" of news content on the "platform" Instagram and Tik Tok.
- An interactive quiz to guess real or fake headlines.
- How content is produced from a publishers perspective, how stories are written and how one word headlines can alter the tone of an online article.
The ultimate aim of the presentation was to foster critical thinking in students when they are viewing online content.
