On Friday 27th September students from 3 Rowan travelled to Arklow Library for a creative writing workshop delivered by Fighting Words. Fighting Words provides free creative writing programmes to children and young people across Ireland and was co-founded by author Roddy Doyle. The workshops give students an opportunity to discover and harness the power of their own imaginations and creative writing skills.
3 Rowan were accompanied by their English teacher Mr. Brian Stack and school librarian Ms. Mary Flynn and they showed tons of creativity at their workshop. Everyone participated in warm up activities such as “What would your last meal be?” and “Three things I would take to a desert island are…”. Students went on to develop characters, settings, and in-depth plots firstly while working in groups, then by writing individually. The students enjoyed listening to each other’s pieces of work and even asked for more writing time at the end.
After the workshop students borrowed books from the library and had an opportunity to try out interactive games on the library’s “magic table” or Tovertafel. We finished with lunch before returning to school.
