Visit of Dr. Aileen Doran to Enniscorthy Community College
On Wednesday 21st February, the Geography Department had a visit from geologist and past pupil, Dr Aileen Doran. She was accompanied by Hannah Binner who is an environmental geochemist. They both gave presentations on what they do to three class groups: Sixth Year Geography, Transition Year and Fifth Year Geography.
Hannah described what an environmental scientist does and explained that she is currently undertaking research in the amount of heavy metals in urban soils. She has carried out various tests on soils in parks in places such as Enniscorthy, Wexford town, Gorey and Cork city.
Aileen explained how she became a geologist, specifically an economic geochemist and how Ms. Merriman, her geography teacher, inspired her. She spoke about the diversity of geology, her travel opportunities and how she currently works in Zambia.
Both speakers explained their third level courses to the students but also spoke about the skills and experiences that have helped them to the career that they have today.
