Go Green for Saint Patrick

12-March-23
Go Green for Saint Patrick

Monday 13th- Thursday 16th March 2023 was ECC's "Go Green for St.Patrick!" week- a week of activities and competitions based on the theme "Litter and Waste" which is the first theme in achieving our Green Flag.

First, Second and Leaving Certificate Applied students met with Clare Donellan from Repak Ireland on Monday where they learned all about recycling and waste management.

At break time, students could sign up to become environmental captains. An environmental captain is a student who pledges to protect the environment and help tackle litter and waste in ECC.

The green schools committee ran different games each lunchtime, including sorting waste into different bins, throwing the bottle through the recycling bullseye, and one handed ball (waste) sorting activity. Students won small Easter eggs as prizes for these mini competitions.

There were three bigger competitions this week also: a digital poster competition (to save paper), a kahoot quiz on litter and waste, and a slogan competition. Amy Williams (3 Holly) won the poster competition, Andrew Pauce (1 Yew) won the Kahoot, and (Jude Dickson 1 Yew) won the slogan competition with his entry of "Leave nothing but footprints behind". These three students each won a €50 Easons voucher and a large Easter Egg. A huge thanks to all students who entered the competition.

Unfortunately, the National Spring Clean planned for Tuesday had to be postponed due to poor weather but we are hoping for a drier April to get out and pick up some litter.

During our “Go Green for St Patrick week” , some of the 3Holly class submitted entries to the Neat Streets #instabin national competition. We are delighted to announce that out of 7 entries, we have 4 winners. Aideen Mirka. Arturs Rannijs. Hannah McInerney. Keeley Tobin. The lucky winners will receive a €50 one for all voucher. Well done everyone and thank you to Ms S Walsh for helping the students. Check out our school social media accounts to see the winning videos. The clothes pod collection is still running also, if anyone has old, clean clothes they no longer want, they can be recycled in ECC until after the Easter holidays.

To finish the week, the Students Council linked in with the Green Schools committee to encourage students to use less plastic and had sample from the Eco Kind shop in Enniscorthy - a sustainable, refill shop. A big thank you to teachers Ms. Aine Sheeran and Ms. Sarah Walsh who organised all the activities and the prizes for the different competitions.
