Literacy Week:
Literacy Week took place in ECC from Monday 11th of March to Friday 15th March. Some of the activities that took place were as follows.
· Word of the Day Competition:
There was a word on VSware daily for the week. Students were encouraged to enter the competition.
· Book Review Competition:
Students were encouraged to submit a review of their favourite books. This could be written in poster format, or alternatively they could perform a rap if they wished.
· Southeast Super-Speller:
First Year students worked on spelling lists during English class during February and March. Four students were selected to represent the school in the regional final on Wednesday 13th March in Waterford Library. The school will hold our own in-school final on Friday March 22nd.
· DEAR (Drop Everything and Read)
On Friday 15th March at 9. 40am, all staff and students read quietly for pleasure for twenty minutes and it was very much appreciated that everyone got involved to make it a whole school endeavour.
· Guest Speakers:
There were several guest speakers and workshops that took place in the library over the last few weeks. Stephen James Smyth worked with Second Years, Caroline Busher with First Years and Carmel Kelly with students on the STAR program.
A special thanks to Ms. Angela Bourke Literacy Coordinator and her Literacy Committee for organising all the activities throughout the week and highlighting the importance to students especially of reading for pleasure to develop interests in other areas and reduce time that potentially could be spent scrolling on your mobile phone.
