Official Opening of the Welcome Wall: Tuesday 20th of February 2024

There was great excitement at Enniscorthy Community College on Tuesday 20th of February as Tiffy Allen the National Coordinator of the School of Sanctuary officially opened the Welcome Wall. Tiffy was also accompanied by two School of Sanctuary ambassadors Olga Ray from Ukraine and Homayoon Shirzad from Afghanistan. They both focused on the positives associated with their homeland and the fact that both countries are substantially bigger than Ireland. They also highlighted and showed great appreciation for the assistance that they have received from the people of Ireland since their arrival. They explained to the students the differences between asylum seekers and refugees and the difficulties faced by people having to flee their country language being one of the big barriers. An interesting fact about Afghanistan is that it is a country that is landlocked and rich in natural resources much of which is still untapped and that its climate allows for the growing of fruit all year round. Regarding Ukraine the students learned that it is the second largest country in Europe, that the Ukrainians are very family orientated and value their time together and it is a country of great natural beauty. At the end of the powerpoint presentation members of the student committee made a small presentation to our invited guests.

Over the last couple of months teachers and students have been working together on the Artwork and the finished article is of very high quality. Construction teacher Mr. Lawton and his students were responsible for the lettering, producing a wooden map of the world with pins inserted showing where students in the school come from. The school crest along with Waterford and Wexford Education and Training Board core values were also designed through wood. Ms. Brennan the Art teacher along with some budding artists produced a magnificent piece of artwork with images associated with countries students are from throughout the world along with welcome in all the different languages. The culmination of all the hard work is now clearly evident on the back wall of the canteen showcasing what can be achieved by teamwork and everyone working towards a similar goal.

The school is currently on its journey to becoming a champion School of Sanctuary and a wide variety of activities have taken place already this year with more to follow. This new initiative this year further highlights the inclusive nature of the school and ties in very well with the core values of Waterford and Wexford Education and Training Board which are Care, Community, Excellence in Education, Equality and Respect. A special thanks to Ms. Siun Cashman and Ms. Mary Flynn who assisted with the organisation of the event.
