The 6th Year Ag Science class visited Kildalton last Thursday, March 13th. The studentshosting Agri-aware’s annual ‘Farm walk-and-talk’ event. The students were treated to a wide variety of educational talks and displays.
They visited many areas of the college’s working farm and saw housing, feeding and management practices used for cows, horses and sheep. The students experienced the lambing process using a ewe-in-lamb model with twin lambs on board needing assistance with delivery. One of our students even docked a lamb’s tail on the day.
The students saw strawberries growing above ground level in glasshouses and were shown examples of using imported wasps to control aphids. They were given a demonstration of tractor safety and discussed the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. ‘Dairymaster’ brought the students through their milking parlour and discussed new technologies to assist the farmer. On top of this, students discussed sustainability through beef, dairy and tillage farming. A huge effort was made by all to coordinate and organise this event to such a high standard. We thoroughly enjoyed our information packed day. A special thanks to Agricultural Science teacher Ms. Tracey Somers who organised the trip and to Ms. Danielle Mulligan Science teacher who also accompanied the students.
