Enniscorthy Community College has started it’s School of Sanctuary journey in the academic year 2023/24. “The vision of the sanctuary movement is simple- that anyone who is in need of sanctuary for any reason will find safety and welcome wherever they go”. Three core principles underly School of Sanctuary:
Learn is a vital building block for schools and underpins the aim that is shared by all schools- to equip students with lifelong knowledge, awareness and skills to be empathetic and empowered global citizens of the future.
Action is the way in which the school makes its commitment to welcome and inclusion visible and tangible. It is where the theory and idea of sanctuary comes to life and where students can get directly involved.
Share is the way in which the school makes its Sanctuary commitment visible to the wider community and the national Sanctuary network. It is how your school shares in the wider vision that those who seek sanctuary here find a culture of welcome and inclusion wherever they go.
Although only in its early stages of the journey a School of Sanctuary Committee made up of students and teachers is already in place. A School of Sanctuary wall is in place in the canteen, along with a Culture Corner. The Art Department are busy putting together an excellent piece of work and the Construction Department are putting the final touches to a wooden map of the world. All members of the school community will also sign the School of Sanctuary pledge and the Multi-cultural Day takes place on the 13th of December showcasing the inclusive nature of the school.
